Abstract
It is perhaps trite to state that the income which supports the majority of Canadian families comes to that family as a result of the fact that one or more family members are employees. But to examine the corollary to this, the fact that the interruption of that employment and consequently of that income can cause immense hardship, is not so trite. Although numerous schemes to lessen this hardship have been developed over the years it is only in the past few years that the question has been asked whether this series of schemes, each one designed to lessen a particular loss, is really adequate to maintain sufficient income during periods of non-employment.
