About
Sara Seck is a full professor at Dalhousie University's Schulich School of Law in Nova Scotia, Canada. She joined Dalhousie in 2017 after ten years at Western University's Faculty of Law. She currently serves as the Director of the Marine and Environmental Law Institute (MELAW) at the law school, as well as the Yogis & Keddy Chair in Human Rights Law (term ending June 2025). She previously served a three-year term as Associate Dean, Research, also at Schulich.
Her research and teaching interests lie at the intersection of human rights and environmental law (international, transnational, domestic, and local), with a specific focus on conceptualizing shared responsibilities (states, businesses, and other organs of society) and intersectional and decolonial approaches to individual and collective rights (Indigenous, gender, children, etc.). Her earlier research focused extensively on the global mining sector; more recent work explores how lessons learned apply to diverse areas of ocean law. Other projects have examined climate law, particularly loss and damage, as well as a human rights-based approach to the plastic value chain, sustainable development, and environmental justice. She currently serves as a co-editor of the Ocean Yearbook.
