Richard Devlin was born and raised in Belfast, Ireland. After graduating from Queen's Belfast he earned his LLM at Queen's Kingston. He is currently a Professor of Law at Dalhousie University and is a frequent contributor to judicial education programmes nationally and internationally. His teaching philosophy is to assist students develop the skills of critical analysis to enable them to recognize the not always positive functions of law in contemporary societies. His most recent books include the co-edited collections Regulating Judges: Beyond Independence and Accountability and Lawyers' Ethics and Professional Responsibility (3rd ed), and Disciplining Judges: Contemporary Challenges and Controversies.
Professor Devlin's research interests are wide-ranging. He has published more than 100 contributions- books, articles, essays and reviews- in both the private and public law realms. Most recently he has been concentrating his efforts on the regulation of the legal professions: legal ethics and judicial ethics. He is particularly interested in comparative analyses of these areas.
