LAWS2382: Tech Competence in Law

    Course

    Description

This course addresses the essential role of technological competence in modern legal practice, equipping law students with critical skills for an increasingly digital and automated legal landscape. As clients, firms, and courts adopt automated, predictive, and generative technologies, lawyers must engage and familiarise themselves with both the underlying mechanics and capabilities of emerging tools to deliver informed and ethical services to the public.

Responding to updates in professional conduct standards, this course offers hands-on experience with both legal-specific and general-purpose technologies through weekly workshops, teaching students to analyse cybersecurity, privacy, and professional responsibility implications of various tools. In conjunction with weekly seminars, students will also engage in critical discussions and carry out independent research toward a major research paper on the ethical, regulatory, and access-to-justice impacts of legal technologies.
